This book was amazing. I was blessed to see Nichole Nordeman in concert about 10 years ago and I distinctly remember her beauty and kind smile. So when I saw this book, I was more than happy to read it and get a better understanding of the Bible through a fresh perspective. What I didn't know was what a treasure I had bought. Nichole writes in such a genuine manner. She is honest as well as funny as she weaves and spins her understanding of the Bible. She very bravely speaks of her experience and her feelings about scripture and biblical characters in order to help expand our own. I recommend this book for anyone who has experienced doubt or who feels as Christians they can't be their full selves. This book was such an encouragement and a joy for my life. I have said for years that I wish Nichole Nordeman would write a book and my wish finally came true and it greatly surpassed all of my expectations. Each story, whether Bible stories or her personal stories, is told with such passion and vivid imagery it as though you are watching it unfold right before you for the first time. Each page holds a fresh new perspective and revealing (and sometimes deeply convicting) truth from the Bible stories I have heard countless times in Sunday School, sermons, Veggie Tales, and vacation Bible School.
But really, that's what I was expecting. What I wasn't expecting (in a good way) was her gripping, at times heart breaking, honesty. You feel as though she is confiding in you, her close personal friend rather than reading a nationally published book. I lost count of the times I thought, "Wow, I've always felt/thought that about faith/the church/God/life but I didn't know it was ok to say it, much less write it." It is refreshing to hear (or read I suppose) someone say, "This is where I am and how I feel and people may not think it is ok, I don't even know if it is ok, but all I know is God knows my heart and He will meet me right where I am. Not where I want or need to be."
Word of advice buy more than one because you are going to want to talk about it with your friends and they tend to give you fewer blank stares if they have read it too!
I have always loved Nichole Nordeman's music, so when I saw she had published a book, I jumped on it! And I was not disappointed. She writes prose with the same skill with which she writes songs. Nordeman revisits the stories of well-known Bible characters but presents them from a different point of view from what we normally hear. She taps into what the characters must have been thinking and feeling, making them feel more real and relatable. I can see myself reading this book again and again.
I really loved this book (and I'm not always that effusive when it comes to books). I began to read and it pulled me in. Her deepest questions were my questions. Her ways of looking and seeing some of the people in scripture, were ways that had cross my mind, too. And some of the issues with her choices and situations as a mom/workingmom, were things I had struggled with in my younger days as a mom (my girls are grown and married now but I still remember...).
Seriously, I was sorry when I finished this book (that's a great sign, too). I wanted to know the author but I also wanted to know more about me and where I'm growing and where I'm challenged and what it means to work through that hard questions that aren't all answered yet. And for me, that's the sign of a great book.
I have been a long-time fan of Nichole Nordeman so when I saw she had written a book, I knew I had to read it. I honestly wasn't expecting too much but once I picked it up, I was completely blown away by her engagingly honest words. She takes familiar stories and brings them to life in new ways, while weaving in reflections from her own life. She is a gifted songwriter so it's no surprise that she is a gifted writer as well, making me cry and then laugh out loud in the same paragraph. I'm recommending this to just about everyone I know.
If you're already familiar with Nichole Nordeman as a brilliant lyricist, then you know she is unquestionably one of the greatest writers on the planet!! I don't know what I can say about her writing that hasn't already been said. Her ability to transfer Bible characters and make them relatable in a very personal way is divinely inspired. Love Story, much like her songs, is genuine, insightful & thought-provoking. However,in her book she is much more raw--baring her soul, admitting her weaknesses & exploring the Christian walk & bravely asking the questions most wouldn't dare. Love Story is a captivating and easy read, yet forces you to dig deeper when it comes to our Christian faith and God's word--this is the genius of Nichole. She is beyond gifted, eloquent, clever, witty & honest!! Read her book--you will not be disappointed!!
My only previous exposure to this authors talent was through her music. I had heard the music from her album "Brave" on the radio by pure chance. I do not typically listen to Christian music but this album really caught my attention. I was looking to see what else she had out now, and came across this book. My curiosity got to me.
What an unexpected surprise this author was! It's really reassuring to find that a talent like this can be so human. So open, so honest. And her very Christian based imagination makes for excellent reading whether or not you align with her beliefs. I personally do, so it was an easy read for me, but the humor and style would carry it on it's own regardless.
It's never happened that I have laughed out loud while reading something serious, and then be moved to tears in the next chapter. Hard for a man to admit, but that's a fact. I'm looking forward to rereading, and to the next book. I hope I don't have to wait too long. They need an option of more than five stars for this one. Wow.
Nicole takes words that you and I use every day and creates pictures and lessons and beautiful examples of how God works all around us in our complex and changing world. She makes me see things in a whole new way. She is a wordsmith and a literary craftsman of the highest order...in books and in songs. I LOVE her.
